June: Josephian Debaters Reach New Heights at MIDC 2026
The SJI Debate Society has achieved a historic milestone at the 2026 MOE–Anglo Chinese Junior College Intercollegiate Debate Competition (MIDC), held from 4 to 6 June. Widely regarded as Singapore’s most prestigious local debating competition, this year’s tournament featured 21 institutions from across the country.
After six rigorous preliminary rounds, Team SJI secured four wins and advanced to the Quarterfinals as the 5th-ranked team. Demonstrating courage, confidence and intellectual rigour, they went on to reach the Semi-Finals, marking the furthest that SJI has ever progressed in the competition.
Competing against some of the nation’s most accomplished debating teams, the Josephians distinguished themselves through their wit, analytical depth and integrity.
Across eight debates, they tackled a diverse range of topics, including fossil fuels, food delivery services, criminal law and even the world of superheroes. The team also earned several individual accolades:
- Patrick Nott Pei De (MN616) – 7th Best Speaker Overall
- Bonifacio Dillan Vittorio Gyula (ML512) – Best Speaker, Round 1
- Jedidiah Eo Shou (MN619) – Best Speaker, Round 6
The MIDC 2026 team comprised Jedidiah Eo Shou (MN619, Team Captain), Kwek Ngan Kat Xavier (ML615, Team Vice-Captain, Patrick Nott Pei De (MN616), Goh Qing Yang Esmond (FN605), Bonifacio Dillan Vittorio Gyula (ML512) and Ignatius Liong Yao Koon (LE608, Reserve).
This achievement reflects not only the team’s hard work and perseverance, but also the strong spirit of community within the Debate Society. Current and former Josephian debaters and teachers came down to support the team throughout the competition, exemplifying the bonds that continue to unite the Josephian debating family.
The school extends its heartfelt appreciation to Coach Harish for his dedication and guidance, and to the teachers and alumni who supported the team along the way. Congratulations to our Josephian debaters on this outstanding achievement. Their success is a testament to the intellectual curiosity, resilience and integrity that define the Josephian spirit. SJI is immensely proud of all of you.
May: Student Leaders Investiture 2026
On 29 May 2026, SJI proudly held its Student Leaders Investiture, a significant occasion celebrating leadership and commitment within our school community.
The ceremony served as an opportunity to recognise the contributions of our outgoing student leaders and officially invested the incoming cohort of leaders from the Creative, Activity and Service (CAS), Co-Curricular Activities (CCA), Student Council and the Prefectorial Board Executive Committee. As they assume their new responsibilities, these Josephian student leaders are called to serve with integrity, courage and dedication.
We were also honoured to welcome student leaders from various junior colleges and secondary schools who joined us in witnessing this important milestone. The investiture ceremony was truly heartwarming and inspiring showcasing the strong school spirit and sense of community.
We thank our outgoing leaders for their dedication and invaluable service and congratulate our newly invested student leaders as they begin their leadership journey.
We wish our new student leaders all the best as they take on the responsibility of serving the school and the trust placed in them. May they continue to lead by example, inspire those around them and uphold the values of SJI in all that they do.

May: A Night of Memories and Friendship
What a night to remember! On 15 May (Fri), the SJI Founder’s Hall was once again filled with the boisterous noise, cheer and laughter from some not-so-young teenagers when our alumni from the Class of 2000 to 2015 gathered for the first of a series of Homecoming events as part of the lead-up to the school’s 175th Anniversary in 2027.
It was a truly joyous evening of “Honouring our Legacy” as our Josephians reconnected with their friends and teachers, many of whom they had not met since their last day in school. From browsing old Josephian Annuals to touring the familiar grounds, the air was thick with nostalgia. Whether it was going back to the classroom they once studied in or the chapel where many prayers were offered in times of need, everything looked so familiar.
Many alumni shared that entering the school gates was like stepping into a time machine, taking them back to their carefree teenage days. Many were glad to meet up with more than 35 teachers present, catching up and expressing gratitude for the work they do to “touch the hearts” of (the students) entrusted to their care. The night ended on a high note, the SJI way, with the singing of the School Rally, a powerful reminder that we are all part of one enduring Lasallian family.
Thank you to the nearly 300 alumni and teachers who came home to kick-off our countdown to SJI’s 175th Anniversary in 2027.

Competing against top paddlers from across the region, they flew the Singapore flag high and represented the nation with distinction. Their efforts saw Elijah clinch Gold in the U18 K2 500m and, together with Choo Kai, secure Gold in the U18 K4 500m, while Mark earned Silver in the U18 C2 500m.
SJI is proud of our canoeists for their achievements and for the dedication, perseverance, and humility they displayed throughout their journey. Congratulations to our athletes for embodying the Josephian spirit while representing Singapore on the international stage.
May: Empowering Educators Through AI, Coding, and Maker Learning
On 29 April 2026, SJI hosted a dynamic professional sharing session on “Coding with AI,” bringing together 23 teachers from schools across Singapore. The session, led by Mr Poh, focused on equipping educators with practical insights and tools to integrate artificial intelligence into coding instruction, with an emphasis on accessibility, creativity, and classroom relevance.
Participants were introduced to emerging AI-assisted development platforms and explored how these tools can support both teachers and students in streamlining workflows, enhancing problem-solving, and lowering barriers to entry in programming. The session also included demonstrations and examples tailored to the local educational context, sparking rich discussions on implementation strategies and pedagogical considerations.
Following the sharing, participants were given a guided tour of SJI’s Makerspace by Mrs Pennie Ong, Mr Ferry and Ms Lim. The tour showcased a range of student projects and facilities, highlighting how design thinking and hands-on learning are embedded within the school’s culture. Teachers had the opportunity to observe how space, tools, and instructional approaches come together to foster innovation and experimentation.
The programme concluded with a hands-on making session conducted by Mr Chester from the Science Centre Singapore. Centered on the theme “Making with Constraints,” the workshop challenged participants to design and create within defined limitations—an approach that underscored the importance of creativity, resourcefulness, and iterative thinking in both teaching and learning.
Overall, the session provided a meaningful platform for professional exchange, inspiring educators to reimagine how coding, AI, and maker education can be thoughtfully integrated into their own school contexts.
May: SJI Teams Achieve Success in AI and Innovation Challenges**
The SJI PRISM team comprising Thet Htun Zaw, David Wong En and Lim Jia Xin emerged as Singapore Champions in the Dengue Slayers Challenge 2026 for their innovative solution to combat dengue outbreaks. They will represent Singapore at the ASEAN Regional Finals this June.

May: SJI World Book Day 2026
SJI World Book Day 2026 was a vibrant celebration of this year’s theme, “Go All In,” encouraging students to immerse themselves in reading across a wide range of interests, including sports, mystery, history, anime, science and beyond.
Year 3 students marked the occasion with The Little Nyonya: Emerald Hill Reading Seminar and Workshop, where they explored the text’s rich historical and cultural dimensions through guided reading and interactive activities led by a professional team.
The celebration also featured a library book display, bookmark-making, a literary quiz, a Treasure Book Hunt and multilingual book recommendations during OMG sessions. Truly, going all in means embracing every story.
May: SJI World Environment Day
SJI commemorated World Environment Day in Term 2 Week 8. The theme for World Environment Day announced by United Nations this year is “A Global Call for Action: Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future”.
To raise awareness about World Environment Day, the school library hosted a 3-day book display with books related to climate change, environmental issues and sustainability.
To encourage deeper reflection on environmental issues, during our weekly reading period, Year 1 students received an article about plastic pollution and their eco-friendly alternatives. Year 2 students received an article on climate adaptation, where they were introduced to climate mitigation strategies across the world. The articles were meant to expose our lower secondary students to environmental issues which might be very abstract to them in a more tangible and age-appropriate manner. It is hoped that the students would be inspired after reading the articles to do their part for climate change as individuals, by taking small individual actions such as reducing the use of plastic consumables in their daily lives. Small steps can bear big results in the long term.
This collaboration between the Library Committee and Humanities Department reflected SJI’s dedication to environmental responsibility, inspiring students to make more sustainable choices in their daily lives. By connecting learning with meaningful action, the initiative sought to nurture socially conscious individuals who can contribute positively towards a more sustainable future.

May: Josephians Shine at NSG Tennis Again!
On 13 May 2026, our SJI A-Division Tennis boys took on ACS (I) in the NSG Tennis Finals at the Kallang Tennis Hub. While ACS (I) entered the competition as defending champions, our Josephians showed us something just as meaningful - tremendous growth, resilience, courage, and heart throughout the season.
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that SJI only started Tennis as a CCA for the A-Division in 2024. Despite being relatively new to the A-Division competition scene, the team has already made significant strides in a short span of time. Reaching the NSG Finals is a true testament to the hard work, commitment, and perseverance of both our players and coaches.
It was a thrilling battle between two top school teams, with electrifying matches involving rallies that showcased remarkable skill, grit, determination, and an indomitable fighting spirit from both sides. Every point was fiercely contested, and the final score of 2–3 reflected just how closely fought the finals were.
Although we finished as Runners-up, we could not be prouder of the teamwork, courage, and strength of character our players demonstrated not just in the finals, but throughout the entire season. They represented the school with pride, grit, sportsmanship, humility, and resilience every step of the way.
Well done, Josephians! You have given the school community every reason to be proud!
May: SJI Celebrates 174th Anniversary Parade
The SJI Uniformed Groups Anniversary Parade was held on 5 May 2026 at the school’s Founders Hall as the rain poured outside. Despite the inclement weather, it did not dampen the spirits of the Uniformed Groups (UG) cadets who were determined to put on a good showing. The annual parade showcased the discipline, commitment, and achievements of the school’s UGs, while recognising the valuable contributions made by cadets and teachers throughout the year.
In the Founder’s Hall, the stirring sounds of the SJI Bagpipes and Drums heralded the start of the evening’s programme. The school was honoured to welcome Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Kenny Teo (SJI Class of 2003), Head Army Systems, Systems Integration Office, as the Reviewing Officer for this year’s parade. LTC Kenny was an exemplary Josephian and he had previously served as Troop Leader of the St Joseph’s Pelandok Scout Unit during his years in the school.
During the parade, LTC Kenny presented awards to outstanding cadets from the five Uniformed Groups in recognition of their exemplary leadership, service, and dedication. Long Service Awards were also presented to teachers in appreciation of their steadfast commitment and contributions to the development of the UGs.
One of the highlights of the evening was the Change-of-Command Ceremony, officiated by SJI Principal, Mr Justin Arul Pierre. Here, the highest-ranking Year 4 cadet from each UG formally handed over his symbol of office to the appointed Year 3 successor, signifying the transition of leadership responsibilities to the next generation of cadet leaders.
The parade concluded with the retiring Year 4 cadet leaders marching off in slow march to the tune of Auld Lang Syne, providing a poignant and fitting close to their term of service and leadership.

May: SJI Celebrates 174th Founder’s Day
In honour of our Founder, St John Baptist de La Salle, St. Joseph’s Institution commemorated our 174th Founder’s Day on 30 April 2026 - a meaningful occasion for the Josephian community to reflect on our Lasallian identity, celebrate our shared heritage, and give thanks for the many blessings bestowed upon the school since its founding in 1852.
This year, we were deeply honoured to welcome home our Guest-of-Honour, Prof Tan Cheng Han, SC (Class of 1980), a distinguished Josephian whose life and achievements continue to inspire generations of students. In his address, Prof Tan shared heartfelt reflections of his journey as a Josephian and encouraged our students to embrace courage, purpose, and integrity as they navigate an increasingly uncertain and complex world. His return to SJI was especially meaningful as he toured the Missio, SJI’s Archives and Museum, revisiting treasured memories through the exhibits and school annuals.
Founder’s Day 2026 brought together close to 2,500 Josephians, alumni, staff, parents, and friends of SJI in a joyful celebration of community and achievement. More than 450 Josephians were recognised for their accomplishments and contributions across academics, sports, leadership, service, and the arts — a testament to the spirit of excellence and holistic education that defines SJI.
The day began in true Josephian tradition with the celebration of Mass, led by Friar Michael D’ Cruz, OFM (Class of 1979). As one community, we reflected with gratitude on 174 years of Lasallian mission and gave thanks to God for His enduring presence and guidance throughout the school’s journey.
The Assembly also featured inspiring performances by our talented Josephians. The SJI Bagpipes & Drums, SJI Band, Vocal Ensemble, and Guitar Ensemble brought elegance, pride, and joy to the occasion, while a memorable musical performance by Samuel Tan (ML612) and Ryan Asher Koo (LE609) added a heartfelt touch to the celebrations. During the Assembly, our Principal, Mr Justin Pierre, presented the School Report, highlighting the achievements, growth, and stories of Josephians who continue to make a positive difference in the school and beyond. He also unveiled the school theme for 2026: “Readying Every Josephian for the Future, Anchored in Faith, Service and Community.” In his address, he reminded the community that amidst the rapid changes and challenges of our world, Josephians must continue to lead with courage, resilience, compassion, and hope.
A significant highlight of this year’s Founder’s Day was the official launch of the SJI 175th Anniversary logo, marking the beginning of our journey towards the school’s historic milestone of 175 years in 2027. As we prepare for this landmark celebration, we do so with deep gratitude to all who have shaped the SJI story across generations.
As one Josephian family, may we continue to honour our rich legacy while courageously building the future together - always guided by the enduring values of Faith, Service, and Community.

April: Celebrating Stories, Ideas and Imagination
The Literary Festival, themed Turning the Page, celebrates the power of stories, ideas, and imagination to open new chapters in our thinking and our lives. Organised by the English Language & Literature and Humanities Departments, it offered a vibrant celebration of language, ideas, and imagination.
Students engaged in a series of thoughtfully curated activities, including Blackout Poetry, where creativity was distilled through careful selection of words, and Whispers of Wisdom, a reflective segment in which teachers and students shared their personal reading journeys and the enduring impact of literature. The highlight of the festival was the Character Parade, where historical and literary figures were brought to life with energy and conviction.
Indeed, SJI hopes for all students to remember that reading is a lifelong conversation, and that the questions literature raises don’t stop when we graduate. They grow with us.
April: SJI Debaters Crowned Champions at Infernus Cup
On Saturday 11 April, the SJI Debate Society fielded two teams at the Infernus Cup Debate Competition, organised by the Nanyang Junior College Debaters & Orators (NYJCDO).
This year’s competition was themed around ideas inspired by the works of Aldous Huxley, exploring the delicate balance between progress and humanity. Designed as a platform for novice speakers, each team comprised developing debaters supported by an experienced non-speaking member. In a demanding and spirited contest, 16 teams from 10 local institutions competed against one another. Over the course of the day, our SJI debaters faced moments of challenge and uncertainty, but demonstrated resilience and teamwork. Their efforts culminated in a remarkable achievement, as they emerged champions, successfully defending the title won by SJI in the previous year.
We are proud to share that SJI Team 2 clinched the First Place. This team comprises Tan Qian Ning (ML514), Aguilar Adrien Clark Lim (MN516), Tan Ka Jun Gavriel (ML513), Ashley Ang Shi Qi (Hong Shiqi) (ML512), Patrick Nott Pei De (MN616, Team Leader).

Well done, Josephians!
April: Riding the Waves to Victory at NSG Canoe 2026
As the choppy waters settle on this year’s Canoe NSG, we are immensely proud of the valiant effort displayed by our SJI Canoe Team.
Both our B Division and C Division canoeists rode the tides with grit and determination, finishing with a commendable 3rd Place overall.
This season has shown just how far we have come. Together, we rose above the tides to clinch 4 gold medals in the B Division and 3 gold medals in the C Division - a remarkable leap forward from just 1 gold medal in 2025.
Our A Division athletes also made their mark in the individual races, bringing home an impressive 2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal.
Behind every result was unwavering discipline, quiet resilience, and the strength of a team that refused to give up. Every stroke, every race, and every moment on the water reflected the spirit of a true Josephian - resilient, united, and always striving for more.

Justin’s dedication, sportsmanship and achievement have brought pride to the school, inspired fellow students and athletes, and has made waves in the local tennis scene. Well done!
April: Strengthening Debate and Community Through Friendly Exchange
The SJI Debate Society recently hosted the CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) Debate Team for a friendly sparring session, which proved to be both engaging and enriching for participants and audience alike.
Across two rounds, six Josephian debaters faced off with six debaters from CHIJ on a range of thought-provoking motions, including the sustainable development of data centres and China’s interests in the Middle East. Each round was followed by insightful feedback from CHIJ’s coach, Mr Edwin Tham, an SJI alumnus, whose perspectives added depth to the learning experience.
Representing SJI were Jason Yeung (ML615), Francesca Wong (MN620), Gideon Tan (ML611), Annabel Yap (FN505), Bonifacio Gyula (ML512) and Fan Enyi (ML511).
Such opportunities are invaluable in nurturing our students’ passion for debate while fostering camaraderie, mutual respect and a broader sense of community beyond the school. It was also heartening to witness strong student leadership, with Jedidiah and the Executive Committee organising the event with care and purpose.
These authentic learning experiences continue to leave a lasting impact, shaping our Josephians into confident, thoughtful, and engaged communicators
March: SJI Cross Country 2026
Under the bright, sunny skies at Bedok Reservoir Park, our annual cross country event brought together our Josephians for a morning full of energy, determination, and school spirit.
Cross country is not just about speed or finishing first. It is about the courage to start, to keep going when it gets tough, and to finish with a sense of purpose.
The event began with the competitive categories being flagged off first, setting a fast and furious pace. Shortly after, the various cohorts of mass run participants followed, setting the route abuzz with excitement and camaraderie.
Over the 3.6km distance, Josephians gave their best with determination and heart, and demonstrated commendable resilience and perseverance to reach the finish line. The hard work and effort put in by each student in the weeks leading up to the event was highly commendable.
Beyond the runners, the event’s success wouldn’t have been possible without the invaluable support of our student volunteers and teacher helpers, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for all.
As we look ahead to our school’s 175th anniversary in 2027, this year’s run served as a meaningful reminder of our enduring Josephian spirit of community - cheering and lifting each other up every step of the way.
March: Josephians Charting Excellence at the ILCA Asian Cup
SJI is proud to celebrate Lim Yuk Jun’s remarkable performance at the ILCA Asian Cup 2026, held in Penghu, Chinese Taipei, from 19 to 24 March 2026.
Amidst a strong international field, Yuk Jun delivered an outstanding showing. He secured 2nd place in the ILCA 4 Youth Under 16 Boys category and achieved an impressive 9th overall in the Open category, competing against older and more experienced sailors.
In the same waters was SJI alumnus and former 2025 team captain, Kenan Tan, who clinched 1st place in the Under 21 category.
The ILCA Asian Cup is a highly competitive regional regatta that brings together top youth sailors from across Asia, racing over multiple days in challenging coastal conditions.
March: Josephians at the Singapore Science and Engineering Fair 2026
Our Josephians participated in the Singapore Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF) 2026, with a total of four teams comprising 11 Josephians representing the school. The fair provided an excellent platform for our students to present their research, exchange ideas, and engage with fellow young scientists from across Singapore.
Team BE026: Huynh Anh Tuan (MN402), Patrick Justilien (LE401), Pham Hong Anh (FN402) worked on the Development of PIEPR: A Low-cost, Raspberry Pi-based Pupillometer to capture the Chromatic Pupil Light Reflex. The project was conducted in SJI.
Team ET020: John Gabriel Lim (FN403), Alexander Tan (MN402), Zachariah Goh (LE403) with project: Investigating The Effects of Surface Hydrophilicity Vs. Hydrophobicity on Water Evaporation Rates. The project was conducted in SJI under School-Based Science Mentorship Programme (SB-SMM).
Team MS062: Nithush Saththikumar (LE609), Sachin Palaniappan (ML611), and Moyukh Sendas (from RI) with project: Working with the Thinnest of all Materials: Atomic Monolayers. This project was conducted in NUS, College of Design and Engineering (CDE), Department of Materials Science and Engineering under MOE Science Research Programme (SRP).
Team SS013: Rakesh Jatin (MN517), Aguilar Adrien Lim (MN516), Raphael Yang (LE506) with the project: Surface Crack Defect Detection on Singapore MRT Tracks A Low-Cost Approach Using TommyBot. This was a home-based research project.
SJI’s participation this year was particularly noteworthy for several reasons. Three out of the four projects were developed internally, reflecting the growing research culture within the school. In addition, one home-based project with no formal mentor was shortlisted for the Final Judging, highlighting the initiative and independence demonstrated by our students.
What matters most is the learning journey. The courage to share their ideas, the resilience to persevere through challenges, and the humility to learn from others and from their own experiences are what truly count. These qualities nurture a spirit of inquiry and discovery, and we are proud of our Josephians for embracing this journey.

March: Josephian Wins Articulation Prize at National Gallery Singapore
SJI is proud to share that Rickey Khine (LE402) has been awarded First Place at the Articulation Prize Singapore 2026, held on 6 March and organised by National Gallery Singapore.
After advancing through three demanding stages, Rickey delivered a compelling art criticism speech on Age of Full Bloom (1979) by San Minn, a powerful surrealist work painted in the aftermath of the artist’s political imprisonment in Myanmar.
What made Rickey’s presentation especially moving was the deeply personal perspective of his interpretation. Drawing from his childhood experiences, he thoughtfully intertwined art history with lived reality. He reflected on the significance of San Minn’s once-censored masterpiece, considering what it may mean for a generation of children growing up amid the uncertainties that have shaped Myanmar since 2021.
Among many outstanding young voices, Rickey distinguished himself not only through sharp critical insight, but also through authenticity of his voice. This is the power of engaging with art; to feel and to connect, and to speak with conviction. Shine on, Rickey!
March: Picnic Under the Stars at SJI
On Friday, 6 March, Picnic Under The Stars (PUTS) 2026 gathered Year 5 and 6 students for a memorable night of laughter, conversation and camaraderie. Organised by SJI Beacon, this annual event offers a meaningful opportunity to forge new friendships and deepen existing bonds through an eventful evening.
Although PUTS is traditionally held at the school field, unexpected bad weather meant that this year’s event took place in the Founder’s Hall instead. The atmosphere remained vibrant and lively, with students still turning up in groups, settling in comfortably, and creating the same sense of togetherness that PUTS is known for. The change in venue did little to dampen spirits, and the hall quickly became a vibrant space buzzing with energy and familiar faces.
Another highlight of the night was the food, made possible through an exclusive collaboration with An Açaí Affair. With açaí bowls included in each bundle sold, students had something refreshing to enjoy as they caught up with friends and settled into the evening. The atmosphere was lifted further by the student band performances, where students enjoyed and sang along to familiar songs, creating a lively environment in the hall.
Beyond an evening of fun and performances, PUTS 2026 was anchored in a larger purpose. This year’s PUTS also marked the first 175th Anniversary fundraising event to be kickstarted via Eventbrite, with all net proceeds from the event contributed towards SJI’s 175th Anniversary campus renewal efforts, supporting projects that will strengthen the school environment for present and future Josephians.
The success of PUTS 2026 was ultimately found in the spirit of community it fostered, proving that even when the stars are out of sight, the Josephian spirit still shines through. <p> </p><hr>
March: Josephians at the Swift Accelerator Programme
SJI is proud to celebrate the achievements of our students who have successfully completed the Swift Accelerator Programme — an intensive eight-month journey into the world of app development.
Organised under the national Swift initiative, the programme equips students with skills in Swift, Apple’s programming language used to build apps for iOS. Participants also collaborated in cross-school teams, identified real-world problems, refined their ideas through design reviews and persevered through countless rounds of testing and debugging.
Their dedication and hard work culminated in an impressive milestone: publishing fully functional apps on the Apple App Store.

We congratulate Carsten Yung, Chan Yap Long, Daniel Chung and Mohammed Hashim for representing SJI with excellence, creativity and resilience. The App Store now has a little bit of SJI inside it. Well done, boys!
March: Champions Once Again – SJI B Division Tennis
Our SJI B Division Tennis Team successfully defended our national title after a thrilling and hard-fought final against ACS (Independent), emerging victorious 3–2 at the Kallang Tennis Hub on 4 March.
What makes this triumph even more meaningful is the journey behind it. In 2024, our C Division team walked off the court with a 1–4 heartbreak in the final. Two years later, in the B Division sequel, our Josephians returned stronger — and this time, they walked off as Champions.
This victory is a powerful reminder that setbacks can become the foundation for even greater comebacks. Through months of disciplined training, astute preparation, and the strength of a deep and united brotherhood, the team rose to the occasion when it mattered most.
The back-to-back titles in 2025 and 2026 ensure that the Tennis Gold stays home. SJI is the 2026 B Division Champions!
March: SG Prespectives with Minister Jasmin Lau
On 27 February 2026, Ms Jasmin Lau, Minister of State in the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) and in the Ministry of Education (MOE), was at St Joseph’s Institution to engage with our Year 6 students through a dialogue session. Our school leadership and teaching staff were also present. The dialogue session was aimed at raising students’ awareness of national issues and to gain a better understanding of the rationale behind government policies, in their formulation and implementation. This year, the theme of the dialogue session was ‘Building Social Capital in a Digital World’.
During the Q & A segment, students took turns asking various questions, such as on the risk of AI dependence, the potential of a digital divide and cybersecurity threats. A key takeaway was that AI has much potential for good - but its use must be judicious and ultimately beneficial for society with adequate safeguards implemented. The dialogue session provided a clearer macro perspective of AI issues, and of how Singapore is evolving politically, economically and socially with the pervasiveness of AI use.
Thank you, Ms Lau, for your fruitful engagement with students and staff. Your heartfelt advice, alongside your candour and eloquence, left an indelible impression on Josephians, inspiring us to strive for a purposeful life with an open mind and a heart of service.
February: Josephians Shine at the Australian Mathematics Competition

The AMC is Australia’s longest-running, largest, and most well-known Mathematics competition for school students. Each year, it features original problems created by leading educators and academics to challenge and extend students’ problem-solving skills. The competition aims to foster interest in mathematics, encourage excellence, and recognise students who demonstrate strong foundational mathematical abilities.
February: Josephian Athlete Spotlight: Michael Jude Sofyan
This year, Michael Sofyan (ML302) proudly represented Singapore at the Western Australia State Junior Track & Field Championships. Competing in the Under-17 400m hurdles, he delivered an outstanding performance, clocking a personal best time of 60 seconds flat and securing Gold for Singapore.
Last year, Michael, together with two other Josephians, also represented Singapore Schools Sports Council at the same championships. There, he clinched an impressive Gold in the Under-15 100m hurdles with a remarkable personal best of 14.06 seconds.
Michael’s consistent excellence and commitment continue to make him a standout athlete and a proud representative of both Singapore and SJI.
February: SJI Debaters Shine at First Local Tournament of the Year
Valentine’s Day weekend proved to be an exciting and memorable one for the SJI Debaters, who took part in the first local competition of the school year hosted by the National University Political Association (NUSPA).
Represented by five dedicated Josephians; Xavier Kwek, Esmond Goh, Jedidiah Eo, Ignatius Liong, and team captain Patrick Nott, the team did SJI proud with an outstanding performance across both days of competition.
By the end of Day 1, the team had secured a Top 8 ranking out of 20 competing teams, earning them a well-deserved spot in the Quarterfinals.
Adding to the day’s achievements, two members were recognised for their exceptional speaking performances:
- Xavier Kwek (Best Speaker, Round 1)
- Esmond Goh (Best Speaker, Round 3)
Although the team’s journey concluded at the quarterfinals, the round was fiercely contested. The panel delivered a split decision in favour of their opponents, yet notably, the chief judge ruled in SJI’s favour, commending the team for a debate “very well fought.”
Despite the long and demanding day, the boys demonstrated resilience, poise, and admirable sportsmanship. True to the words carried on their jackets, they walked away “HEADS UNBOWING”, having represented SJI with honour.
February: SJI Celebrates Inaugural Assembly 2026
The Inaugural Assembly is one of SJI’s most meaningful and cherished school traditions, marking the official start of a new school year. It is the first formal school assembly in which the entire school community gathers in gratitude, united in welcoming the months ahead. On this special occasion, the school came together to warmly welcome our newest Josephians from Year 1 and Year 5, as well as the new members of both the teaching and non-teaching staff.
The assembly began with a Eucharistic celebration led by Fr John Paul Tan OFM, reaffirming our shared Lasallian identity. During the service, he blessed the school flag and colours, enduring symbols that have long inspired unity and school spirit across generations of Josephians.
Principal, Mr Justin Arul Pierre, outlined the school’s direction and focus areas for 2026, and shared the school’s theme for 2026 - “Readying Every Josephian for the Future, anchored in Faith, Service and Community”. He also mapped out the school’s preparations for SJI’s 175th Anniversary celebrations next year, sharing the series of events and initiatives planned over the next two years leading up to this milestone
Mr Pierre called on the school community to play an active part in these celebrations, highlighting opportunities for contribution and participation. In particular, he shared about the school’s 175th Anniversary fund-raising efforts this year, which will support essential campus renewal and infrastructural upgrades and development projects across the school, to enhance the learning environment for our students, enabling SJI to continue delivering a high-quality, values-centred and future-ready education.
February: SJI Celebrates Lunar New Year
SJI welcomed the Lunar New Year with a festive school-wide celebration filled with colour, culture and community spirit. The campus buzzed with excitement as traditional activities unfolded throughout the week, culminating with a spirited concert in the Indoor Sports Hall. In the lead-up to the event, the Chinese New Year Celebrations Organising Committee worked closely with students from various groups to transform the school environment. Peach blossoms, bright red lanterns and soft decorative lights adorned the spaces, creating an atmosphere of joy and abundance.
A well-loved feature of the festivities was the Chinese calligraphy activity, where students and teachers collaborated to create elegant pieces of art. Beyond learning brush techniques, participants enjoyed a meaningful moment of cultural appreciation and shared creativity.
The celebration reached its peak with a dynamic concert showcasing the talents of our Josephians. A spirited lion dance opened the show with wishes of prosperity, followed by an exciting programme that featured the SJI Band, the SJI Vocal Ensemble, the SJI Guitar Ensemble, a high-energy hip-hop performance by the Dance CAS and two song performances by our Year 6 students. There was also a special song featuring songwriter and composer Wong Rong Zhen and Zhen Zekai from ML 201 who won the Merit Award in the Xinyao Songwriting Competition 2025 with the song entitled Reunion Dinner.
SJI’s Lunar New Year festivities were a heartwarming reminder of the school’s commitment to honouring culture, fostering togetherness and celebrating the diverse traditions that enrich our community.
February: SJI Celebrates Total Defence Day 2026
On Monday, 9 Feb, SJI commemorated Total Defence Day with a simulated digital disruption, as part of Exercise SG Ready 2026. Internet connectivity was temporarily disrupted for two hours, requiring staff and students alike to adapt accordingly. Josephian Formation Journey (JFJ) lessons were conducted in the following days where Josephians reflected on their experience, and discussed how a digital disruption can have a severe impact on our transport, finance and communication sectors.
The next day, Major (NS) Wong Pixiang, an alumnus of the Class of 2005, gave a talk to the Year 1’s on the importance of Total Defence and the RSAF’s role in defending our nation. His talk served as a reminder that defence is a shared responsibility, not just for the armed forces but for every citizen, even those who are young and growing.
By staying vigilant, supporting one another, and strengthening our community bonds, we help safeguard Singapore’s peace, security, and way of life for future generations.
February 2026: SJI Welcomes the Year 5 Cohort of Josephians
SJI welcomed the Year 5 cohort on 5 February with an Orientation Programme built around the theme “Anchored in Mission, Steered by Common Vision.” Student leaders and teachers eagerly introduced the cohort to the Lasallian ethos and traditions as well as the Josephian identity and spirit that shape life at SJI. The orientation programme aimed to help students understand the rich heritage they are joining and the values that define what it means to be a Josephian.
Over four days, students participated in a series of engaging activities, including bonding and heritage-based games in La Salle’s Legacy: Sailing through Time, Rise from Ruins, and Finale, held across the SJI campus and the Botanic Gardens, culminating in a campfire experience. Each day also featured meaningful programmes such as heritage plays depicting the school’s history and conversations centred on key Josephian role models who have shaped SJI’s history.
These activities were intentionally designed to be lively, purposeful, and community-building. They helped the Year 5s familiarise themselves with their new environment, forge friendships, create shared experiences and strengthen their sense of belonging to the school. Additionally, a new service learning experience in collaboration with NTUC Health Active Ageing Centres and Methodist Welfare Services was incorporated, showcasing the spirit of service that Josephians strive to embody as Men and Women for Others.
Ending off with the campfire, the lively atmosphere reflected the newfound bonds created throughout the camp, as everyone sang and danced energetically. As the Year 5 cohort were welcomed into the Josephian family, they were reminded of the warmth of community, the joy of belonging, and the assurance that they will be supported in their journey by their peers, their teachers and a school that believes in them.
February: Josephian Makes Waves in Hong Kong
SJI congratulates Nigel Tan (ML403) for his exceptional performance at Hong Kong Race Week and the Hong Kong Nationals.
Nigel placed 5th overall at the Nationals, 3rd in the men’s category, and achieved an impressive 8th overall at the 29er Asian Championship. These are remarkable accomplishments, especially considering that he is still relatively new to the 29er class.
His results reflect not only his talent and growth potential, but also his discipline, resilience, and determination to learn from every race.
January: Josephians at ACE
ACE Camp 2026 offered Year 2 students a rich and immersive outdoor learning experience that brought together National Education (NE) themes, Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, and values-based character formation. Designed as a holistic programme beyond the classroom, the camp challenged students physically, mentally and socially, while grounding their learning in real-world contexts relevant to Singapore.
Josephians explored key issues of resource sustainability and national resilience through hands-on experiences. Outdoor cooking activities prompted meaningful discussions on food security, where students planned meals, managed limited resources and reflected on Singapore’s reliance on global food systems. Hikes and learning journeys around our water catchment areas deepened their understanding of water security, environmental stewardship and the importance of long-term planning in safeguarding the nation’s future.
The camp programme also emphasised the development of ATL skills through daily reflections. Through kayaking, cycling and orienteering activities, students practised teamwork, communication, self-management and problem-solving as they navigated unfamiliar terrain and dynamic challenges. These activities required students to make collective decisions, manage fatigue and support one another, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and resilience.
Our team of ACE Leaders played a vital role throughout the camp, modelling positive leadership, guiding their peers and reinforcing a culture of care and responsibility. Their leadership helped create a supportive environment where students felt encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and learn from both successes and setbacks.
ACE Camp 2026 continues to be a meaningful experiential learning at SJI.
January: SJI’s Work Experience Programme 2026
SJI successfully concluded the Work Experience Programme (WEP) 2026 on a high note with a celebratory closing ceremony on 28 January. The programme engaged over 180 students, including students from Bendemeer Secondary School and St. Andrew’s School (Secondary), and fostered collaboration with more than 60 industry partners and host organisations.
SJI’s WEP aims to provide student participants with hands-on experience in a real-world work environment, enable them to value and appreciate all occupations, enhance their career awareness and support school goals by preparing students for future employment.
Students reported that after 2-3 weeks of WEP in January, they gained a deeper understanding of workplace culture and expectations, which fostered their confidence in their future careers.
Achyut Aravindh (FN403), who was attached to the Department of Orthopedic Surgery of NUH, shared that he learned that being a doctor requires patience, as well as empathy when dealing with patients, for example, explaining details of a surgery or asking patients to reconsider risky procedures. What surprised him was that doctors work very long hours.
Ethan Chong (LE403) had the privilege of being attached to DDK Capital, a boutique consultancy firm in the PE industry, and shared that it was an eye-opening experience. He visited the factories of DDK’s clients, such as Dawn Plastic Industries, Khoo Sun Printing and Character Montessori. He gained an understanding of how local businesses operate through personal analysis and predictions.
We are extremely grateful for the collaboration and support of our industry partners, alumnus and parent volunteers in this WEP. SJI is committed to strengthening these partnerships and expanding opportunities to ensure our students continue to gain valuable industry insights and skills in future iterations of the programme.
January: TABA 2026
Over the course of two days, SJI organised Camp TABA (Together And By Association), a programme aimed at building meaningful connections between the Year 3 students as they begin the start of their two-year journey as a class.
The camp comprised two parts: the first involved the building of sandcastles at East Coast Park. The half day out allowed the Year 3s to enjoy themselves in the sun and provided an invaluable opportunity for them to collaborate on a shared vision; forging new friendships and finding out more about each other.
The second part of the programme saw our students engaged in meaningful discussions and creative exercises in school. These discussions allowed the Year 3s to lay the foundation blocks of building a shared class culture and spirit.
Camp TABA always marks the beginning of their journey together as Upper Secondary students and has always served as the bedrock for a vibrant and supportive community.
January: SJI at the ISYF 2026
The International Science Youth Forum (ISYF) 2026, hosted by Hwa Chong Institution, provided an enriching platform for inquisitive, science-driven students to explore diverse scientific fields and engage with distinguished researchers, including Nobel laureates. Centred on the theme “Curiosity Unlocked: How Questions Drive Discovery in the Age of AI,” the five-day programme offered a dynamic blend of academic learning, cultural exchange, and scientific discovery.
This year, SJI was represented by a team comprising John Gabriel Lim (FN403), Zachariah Goh (LE403) and Alexander Tan (MN402).
The forum began with a school assembly and mass photo-taking, followed by a Cultural Exhibition where delegates learned about the traditions of participating countries. Delegates then embarked on the Singapore Discovery Trail, visiting historical and cultural landmarks such as Fort Canning and Chinatown. In the days that followed, participants attended an engaging lecture by Professor Sow Chorng Haur, hands-on workshops at Science Centre Singapore, and two immersive masterclass sessions led by experts in specialised scientific fields. Activities such as Science Quest, the ArtScience Museum visit, and a poster exhibition further deepened students’ exposure to multidisciplinary scientific concepts.
Zachariah shared that ISYF was a memorable opportunity to collaborate with like-minded peers and delve into advanced scientific ideas. He particularly enjoyed Professor Sow’s interactive lecture on nanotechnology and found his masterclass with materials scientist Dr Kedar highly insightful, especially on the role of artificial intelligence in accelerating scientific experimentation. ISYF 2026 concluded with a closing lunch at a hotel and poster presentations, leaving delegates with new knowledge, meaningful friendships and a renewed passion for scientific inquiry.

January: SJI Rejoices in the Outstanding O-Level Results of our Class of 2025
Josephians from the Class of 2025 have excelled in the 2025 GCE O-Level Examinations, with 100% of the students passing and advancing to junior colleges and polytechnics for their post-secondary education. 96% of the cohort qualified for junior college, and 70% scored 5 Distinctions or more.
But beyond the numbers and grades, they tell a deeper story - a story of Josephians who stayed the course, showed up, rose to the occasion and who learned to overcome challenges.
Principal Mr Justin Arul Pierre commended the cohort, noting that our Josephians have once again proven their strength and commitment through their outstanding O-Level performance. He highlighted that these results are a testament to their resilience, steady discipline and the strong bonds they forged as they supported one another along the way.
Addressing the Class of 2025, he shared that the entire Josephian community rejoices in their hard work and accomplishments. As they move into the next stage of their education, he encouraged them to carry with them the values of Faith, Service and Community that have guided their journey at SJI. These ideals, he reminded them, will continue to light their path as they strive to inspire others and contribute meaningfully to the world around them.
Congratulations to the Class of 2025!
January: SJI Welcomes our 2026 Year 1 cohort
Monday, 12 January brought a warm and celebratory close to SJI’s two-week Year 1 Orientation, as the Initiation Ceremony and Campfire welcomed our newest Josephians into the school community. Marking their first milestone in this shared journey at SJI, the evening was filled with pride, excitement and a strong sense of belonging.
As Peer Support Leaders pinned badges onto the boys’ uniforms, the stirring strains of “We are the Young” filled the Founder’s Hall. Soon after, cheers and songs rang out across the Oval, igniting the SJI spirit. The cheers and songs, paired with the jubilant glow of the campfire beneath the cloudy night sky, created a memorable atmosphere for all. The occasion drew more than 1,200 parents, alumni, guests and students, a powerful reflection of the close-knit community that defines SJI. Beyond the formal induction of the Year 1 cohort, the ceremony celebrated friendship, unity and the hopes and aspirations the boys bring as they join generations of Josephians before them.
Throughout the orientation programme, the Year 1s immersed themselves enthusiastically in activities designed to build strong bonds and deepen their understanding of SJI’s rich heritage and strong traditions. Highlights included an overnight camp, a visit to the historic Bras Basah Road campus site and opportunities to explore the school’s diverse CCAs. From sports and uniformed groups to the performing arts, the boys were encouraged to step beyond their comfort zones, develop new skills and discover interests to pursue. Meaningful interactions with seniors further broadened their appreciation of life in the SJI community.
The campfire celebration itself showcased the energy and spirit of the four fraternities, Fintan, Lawrence, Marcian and Michael, as students came together in spirited cheers, songs and displays of fraternity pride. It was a fitting and inspiring start to their SJI journey, one rooted in learning, discovery and personal growth.
January 2026: SJI Celebrates the IB Class of 2025!
SJI proudly congratulates the IB Class of 2025 for their outstanding performance in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) November 2025 Examinations. All 273 students who sat for the IBDP exams in November passed, and were awarded the IB Diploma. The cohort achieved an impressive average score of 40.4 points, with more than 68% of students scoring 40 points and above, reflecting the cohort’s strong academic achievement and consistent pursuit of excellence.
On 2 January, our graduates returned to the campus and gathered in the Founder’s Hall, where they were warmly welcomed by School Leaders, teachers, and parents. The celebration recognised not only their stellar academic performance, but also their formative journey of learning, discovery, and growth into compassionate, purposeful, and critical thinkers who have used their gifts to serve others in school and the wider community.
Mr Justin Arul Pierre, Principal of St. Joseph’s Institution, shared: “The outstanding performance of the Class of 2025 once again affirms SJI’s belief in a holistic education - one where strong academic foundations are nurtured alongside character formation.
Our students have sharpened their intellect, discovered and pursued their passions, and engaged deeply with the world around them, always guided by a spirit of service and a desire to make a meaningful impact. Their excellent results are a testament to their perseverance, resilience, hard work, and ‘gung-ho’ spirit, as well as to the unwavering dedication and commitment of our teachers, whose passion and guidance continue to bring out the best in every Josephian. We are deeply proud to send forth this exceptional cohort of graduates, confident that they are well prepared to lead with integrity and serve with purpose as they contribute meaningfully to a better world.”
