SJI World Environment Day

SJI commemorated World Environment Day in Term 2 Week 8. The theme for World Environment Day announced by United Nations this year is “A Global Call for Action: Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future".

To raise awareness about World Environment Day, the school library hosted a 3-day book display with books related to climate change, environmental issues and sustainability.

To encourage deeper reflection on environmental issues, during our weekly reading period, Year 1 students received an article about plastic pollution and their eco-friendly alternatives. Year 2 students received an article on climate adaptation, where they were introduced to climate mitigation strategies across the world. The articles were meant to expose our lower secondary students to environmental issues which might be very abstract to them in a more tangible and age-appropriate manner. It is hoped that the students would be inspired after reading the articles to do their part for climate change as individuals, by taking small individual actions such as reducing the use of plastic consumables in their daily lives. Small steps can bear big results in the long term.

This collaboration between the Library Committee and Humanities Department reflected SJI’s dedication to environmental responsibility, inspiring students to make more sustainable choices in their daily lives. By connecting learning with meaningful action, the initiative sought to nurture socially conscious individuals who can contribute positively towards a more sustainable future.
