SJI wins 1st prize in the SMS Essay Competition 2021

Three Josephians won first prize for an essay modelling COVID-19 public health measures.
Congratulations to Timothy Tan (FN501), Loh Zi Quan Keith (ML511) and Evan Michael Neo Ren Jie (ML512) on winning Category C First Prize in the SMS Essay Competition 2021.
The Singapore Mathematical Society (SMS) had chosen the theme “Mathematics and Pandemics” for this year's competition to encourage students to explore and discover different facets of Mathematics in our everyday life and realize the application of Mathematics in real life. The team’s winning essay - “Using a model of differential equations to assess the effectiveness of public health measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19” demonstrated ably how mathematics can be applied to disaster management, public healthcare, and biomedical science especially in this pandemic.
