SJI Students Excel in the International Mathematical Modelling Challenge 2025

Two teams competed, with one earning a Distinction and the other a Merit Award for real-world problem-solving models.
Two teams of Josephians from Year 4, 5, and 6 were selected to participate in the International Mathematical Modelling Challenge (IMMC). The competition offers a platform for students to apply mathematics to real-world issues, encouraging collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.
After several days of intensive problem-solving and model-building, the SJI teams delivered exceptional results: one team was awarded a Distinction, while the other received a Merit Award.
The Distinction Award team comprised Kum Trakal (MN616), Ng Zi Hao (MN518), Brent Leong Kai Yuan (LE402), and Krishay Gautam Patel (LE403).
Reflecting on the experience, Trakal shared, "It was both challenging and exciting to take on such a complex real-world problem with a mathematical lens. We learned a lot about working together under pressure and thinking beyond the textbook." The Merit Award team included Lim Caleb (LE507), Jeyagurumoorthy Jaisrinivaas (FN504), Steven Wang (MN520), and Louis Anderson Yapendi (LE403).
Speaking about the journey, Louis commented, "Even though it was tough at times, the process taught us perseverance and how to frame our thinking in a more structured way. The guidance we received from our teachers was invaluable. It really opened my eyes to how mathematics is used outside the classroom. I’d love to take part in something like this again."
SJI congratulates all participants on their outstanding performance and extends appreciation to the Mathematics Department for their mentorship and support throughout the competition.
