SJI Shines at ILLUSTRATUM: A Hallway Physics Competition

SJI sent five teams of Year 3 and 4 Josephians to participate in the prestigious ILLUSTRATUM: A Hallway Physics Competition, hosted by the Physics Department at the National University of Singapore (NUS). The competition, which promotes effective communication in Physics, saw our students competing against over 80 teams from various schools, with all our teams clinching distinguished awards.

Over the course of three months, the students demonstrated commitment and teamwork as they tirelessly developed their prototypes and mastered new concepts. Their hard work culminated in a series of impressive presentations to the judges at NUS, where they were recognised for their innovative designs and insightful explanations, earning them well-deserved accolades.

Distinction Award

• Team PHYSICS BOYS: Isaac Soh (FN402), Kayden Tan (FN402), and Teng Jun Yao (FN403)

Merit Award

• Team HAPPY BANANAS: Raphael Cheng (MN403), Gobinath Pavithiran (MN403) and Sidney Alexander (MN403)

• Team PDF Files: Joel Ng Jun Yang (ML403), Isaac Gabriel Ng Le Kai (ML403) and Evan Hsu Zi Yi (LE402)

• Team HAPPY LAWRENCE: Reagan Low (LE302), Pyae Swun Htet (LE302) and Emery Yeo (LE302)

Jelly Bagelsss, the Year 3 team that won the Best Journal and Distinction Award worked on “The wave-particle duality of light and the Photoelectric Effect”. Their experiment explored the wave-particle duality of light through Young's Double Slit Experiment. They also built an electroscope to show its function and the photoelectric effect.

The Physics Boys who won the Distinction Award did a project on “Seismic Damping and its effect on infrastructure” that demonstrated how through seismic damping, a building's structural strength and stability are greatly increased, rendering it safer and less susceptible to the effects of an earthquake.

These two teams have been invited to present their projects to the public at Science Centre Singapore during the September Holidays.
