SJI’s Literary Festival 2025

The English and Humanities departments ran a festival with quizzes, a scavenger hunt, and a talk by Dorsal Effect founder Kathy Xu on shark conservation.
This year’s Literary Festival saw a collaborative effort between the English Language & Literature as well as Humanities Departments. In the Literary Festival, the two departments sounded a sharp rally cry for rights ─ be it for individual freedoms to environmental and animal rights ─ all of which emphasised literature’s and history’s role in fostering awareness and advocacy.
During the course of the week, the students participated in Literary & History quizzes, Literary Scavenger Hunt, Resigning Book Cover Competitions etc. The Year 2s also heard from Ms Kathy Xu, the founder of The Dorsal Effect, a sustainable ecotourism initiative that offers alternative livelihoods to shark fishermen in Lombok, Indonesia. There they were compelled to rethink their consumption choices and ethics involved even in researching sea creatures.
In the end, the Literary Festival was more than a celebration - it was a call to action. It reminded Josephians that literature sparks awareness, and history bears witness, arming us with the tools to stand, speak and spark change.
