SJI Makes History at the Sorsilambam Tamil Debate Competition

This year marked a historic milestone for the SJI Tamil Debate Team. For the first time in our school’s history, we advanced to the semi-finals of the prestigious Sorsilambam Tamil Debate Competition, a national-level tournament for Junior College, ITE, and Polytechnic students. The event is organised by the People’s Association Indian Activity Executive Committees Council (PA Narpani Pearavai) and the Indian Activity Executive Committees.

Our team’s journey to the top four was nothing short of extraordinary. Competing alongside some of the nation’s leading debate institutions, including Raffles Institution and Eunoia Junior College, the team demonstrated exceptional passion, clarity, and conviction. The semi-finals were held on 29 March at the Umar Pulavar Tamil Language Centre, where we faced off against Anderson Serangoon Junior College in a fiercely contested debate.

A standout highlight of the competition was Josephian Ibramsa Idris Ahamed (FN501), who delivered exceptional performances and was awarded Best Speaker in every round leading up to the semi-finals, a rare and commendable feat that reflects both his excellence and the team’s overall caliber.

This trailblazing achievement showcased the strength, dedication, and spirit of our debaters and set a new benchmark for future cohorts. The team's success exemplifies what can be accomplished through resilience, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
