SJI Celebrates Tamil Language and Culture at ICS Camp 2025

The Indian Cultural Society held a two-day Tamil Language Camp featuring a lamp-lighting ceremony and traditional performances.
In May, the SJI Indian Cultural Society hosted a vibrant two-day Tamil Language Camp, immersing students in the richness of Tamil culture. The camp began with an auspicious lamp-lighting ceremony graced by Principal Mr. Justin Arul Pierre and Vice-Principal Mr. Dominic Ang.
Mr. Pierre’s opening address highlighted the importance of embracing the Tamil language as part of one’s identity. He shared that Tamil is more than just a means of communication - it is a gateway to a rich literary tradition, a treasure trove of values, history, philosophy and a living heritage that has shaped generations. Mr. Ang then captivated the audience with a fluent speech in Tamil, centred on the camp’s theme, “Thamizhanda” (“I am Tamil”). Guided by emcees Ibramsa Idris Ahamed (FN501) and Surendran Srinikesh (LE507), the camp featured a range of activities. Teacher-in-charge Dr. Selvarani, along with ICS leaders Meyyappan and Ruthran, spoke passionately about the theme. Students engaged in traditional performances and workshops such as Silambattam and Parai, and participated in cultural and language-based games designed to deepen their appreciation of Tamil heritage.
A highlight of the camp was a motivational session by alumnus Packiaraj Alanjoyel (Class of 2022), who shared how SJI shaped his journey.
Thanks to the strong support of the school leaders and the dedication of the ICS, the camp was a resounding success. Students left with a deeper connection to their culture, and learned not just about Tamil traditions, but truly living them out in their daily lives.
