SJI Celebrates 174th Founder’s Day

In honour of our Founder, St John Baptist de La Salle, St. Joseph’s Institution commemorated our 174th Founder’s Day on 30 April 2026 - a meaningful occasion for the Josephian community to reflect on our Lasallian identity, celebrate our shared heritage, and give thanks for the many blessings bestowed upon the school since its founding in 1852.

This year, we were deeply honoured to welcome home our Guest-of-Honour, Prof Tan Cheng Han, SC (Class of 1980), a distinguished Josephian whose life and achievements continue to inspire generations of students. In his address, Prof Tan shared heartfelt reflections of his journey as a Josephian and encouraged our students to embrace courage, purpose, and integrity as they navigate an increasingly uncertain and complex world. His return to SJI was especially meaningful as he toured the Missio, SJI’s Archives and Museum, revisiting treasured memories through the exhibits and school annuals.

Founder’s Day 2026 brought together close to 2,500 Josephians, alumni, staff, parents, and friends of SJI in a joyful celebration of community and achievement. More than 450 Josephians were recognised for their accomplishments and contributions across academics, sports, leadership, service, and the arts — a testament to the spirit of excellence and holistic education that defines SJI.

The day began in true Josephian tradition with the celebration of Mass, led by Friar Michael D’ Cruz, OFM (Class of 1979). As one community, we reflected with gratitude on 174 years of Lasallian mission and gave thanks to God for His enduring presence and guidance throughout the school’s journey.

The Assembly also featured inspiring performances by our talented Josephians. The SJI Bagpipes & Drums, SJI Band, Vocal Ensemble, and Guitar Ensemble brought elegance, pride, and joy to the occasion, while a memorable musical performance by Samuel Tan (ML612) and Ryan Asher Koo (LE609) added a heartfelt touch to the celebrations. During the Assembly, our Principal, Mr Justin Pierre, presented the School Report, highlighting the achievements, growth, and stories of Josephians who continue to make a positive difference in the school and beyond. He also unveiled the school theme for 2026: “Readying Every Josephian for the Future, Anchored in Faith, Service and Community.” In his address, he reminded the community that amidst the rapid changes and challenges of our world, Josephians must continue to lead with courage, resilience, compassion, and hope.

A significant highlight of this year’s Founder’s Day was the official launch of the SJI 175th Anniversary logo, marking the beginning of our journey towards the school’s historic milestone of 175 years in 2027. As we prepare for this landmark celebration, we do so with deep gratitude to all who have shaped the SJI story across generations.
