SJI Celebrates 173rd Founder’s Day

In honour of our Founder, St John Baptist de La Salle, SJI commemorated our 173rd Founder’s Day on 30 April 2025, bringing the entire school community together in a spirit of thanksgiving, unity, and celebration. This annual event is a cherished moment to reflect on our Lasallian identity, celebrate the achievements of Josephians and recommit ourselves to the mission and values that define SJI.

We were privileged to welcome back Prof Ooi Eng Eong (Class of 1984), Professor of Emerging Infectious Diseases at Duke-NUS Medical School, as our Guest-of-Honour. Prof Ooi, a distinguished alumnus, shared inspiring insights in his address and later wrote to express his deepest thanks for the rare privilege and honour of returning to SJI in this capacity. He shared that he is still over the moon with the whole experience - a heartfelt affirmation of the SJI spirit and hospitality.

The day began in the SJI tradition with the celebration of Mass, led by our Chaplaincy team, with the support of teacher and student communion ministers. It was a moment of reflection and gratitude, giving thanks to God for 173 years of blessings since the school's founding in 1852.

The Founder’s Day Assembly brought together more than 2,500 Josephians, alumni, staff, and parents, who were treated to a memorable showcase of Josephian talent and spirit. This year was particularly meaningful as we celebrated the achievements of over 450 Josephians, a testament to the talent, hard work, and character nurtured in our school community. Their success is a source of pride and inspiration for us all.

The Assembly featured stirring performances, including a moving rendition of “Goodness of God” by Emma Khoo (MN616), Jenni Lee (MN618), and Raine Chew (FN601). Our performing arts groups also dazzled with their Singapore Youth Festival 2025 Presentations—“Ramkali” by the SJI Vocal Ensemble and “Samba of the Sun” by the SJI Guitar Ensemble, both of which earned enthusiastic applause and admiration.

Mr Justin Pierre, our Principal, delivered the School Report for the period of April 2024–March 2025, highlighting the many milestones achieved by the school and affirming the wonderful contributions and unique stories that each Josephian is writing.

In his address, he reminded us to live out our Founder’s vision with courage and commitment. This vision, rooted in the principles and values of faith, service, and community, calls us to put others before self and to answer the call to be servant leaders. This vision guides our actions and shapes the unique SJI story we are all a part of.
