Josephians Triumph in Ortega Cup 2024

Josephians did the school proud by emerging as the winners after defeating Raffles Institution (RI) 3-0 in the Under-16 category of the Ortega Cup, held on 15 August at SJI.

The match was intense and action filled. Both teams showcased true skill and determination, going head-to-head in their physical challenges. Ethan Loh (FN302) gave the team an early lead in the 7th minute with a powerful finish in the penalty box before Timothy Ng (LE301) scored the second goal with an instinctive finish in the 14th minute of the first half. Aidan Irfan (MN201), fresh from winning the NSG C Division Boys League 1 Final and playing in his final match for SJI, sealed the game with a well-taken goal and was swarmed by his jubilant teammates for what would be a perfect send off before he leaves for Spain. This victory marks the 10th consecutive year that SJI has won the competition.

In the Under-40 category, former players from both institutions rekindled old rivalries, bringing a sense of nostalgia and camaraderie to the event. RI took the lead in the 14th minute of the first half before Cayden Thong (SJI Class of 2021) scored two well-taken penalties to give SJI’s Under-40 the lead. RI’s Under-40 then clawed their way back into the game, equalizing in the 62nd minute before sealing the game winner in the 80th minute to clinch the Suhaimi Ali Cup. The game ended 3-2 in favour of RI’s Under-40 and this friendly competition showcased the enduring bond between the two schools, with both players and teachers sharing moments of good banter between them.

Named after Mr Robert Ortega, an ex-staff member of RI, this annual football tournament has been fostering team spirit and sportsmanship between RI and SJI since the 1970s. The Ortega Cup continues to be a cherished tradition that brings the boys, and old boys, from both institutions together in the spirit of healthy competition.
