A Year 4 team took third prize at GMAC's Students Challenge with a project on CRISPR-Cas9. Read about their work.
A team of Y4 students participated in the Annual Genetic Modification Advisory Committee or GMAC's Students Challenge. This inter-school competition is organised as part of GMAC’s ongoing efforts in educating the public on genetic-modification related issues. Through this competition, GMAC aims to promote active learning and stimulate students’ interest in the science behind genetic modification technology.
This year’s theme is “What is CRISPR-Cas9 Technology and its Applications?” The team from SJI, comprising of Ibramsa Idris Ahamed (FN401), Surendran Srinikesh (FN401), Jedidiah Eo Shuo (FN401) and Patrick Nott Pei De (ML403), worked on CRISPR-Cas9 Gene Editing Treatment for Sickle Cell Disease, illustrating the mechanism of CRISPR-Cas9 as a gene editing tool and weigh the pros and cons using CRISPR-Cas9.
Through their infographic poster in the preliminary round and presentation in the finals, the team clinched third prize and a $200 cash voucher. Well done, Team SJI!
