Josephian Debaters Reach New Heights at MIDC 2026

SJI's debate team reached the Semi-Finals of the 21-school MIDC tournament for the first time ever, with Patrick Nott Pei De named 7th Best Speaker Overall.
The SJI Debate Society has achieved a historic milestone at the 2026 MOE–Anglo Chinese Junior College Intercollegiate Debate Competition (MIDC), held from 4 to 6 June. Widely regarded as Singapore's most prestigious local debating competition, this year's tournament featured 21 institutions from across the country.
After six rigorous preliminary rounds, Team SJI secured four wins and advanced to the Quarterfinals as the 5th-ranked team. Demonstrating courage, confidence and intellectual rigour, they went on to reach the Semi-Finals, marking the furthest that SJI has ever progressed in the competition.
Competing against some of the nation's most accomplished debating teams, the Josephians distinguished themselves through their wit, analytical depth and integrity.
Across eight debates, they tackled a diverse range of topics, including fossil fuels, food delivery services, criminal law and even the world of superheroes. The team also earned several individual accolades:

Bonifacio Dillan Vittorio Gyula (ML512) – Best Speaker, Round 1
Jedidiah Eo Shou (MN619) – Best Speaker, Round 6
The MIDC 2026 team comprised Jedidiah Eo Shou (MN619, Team Captain), Kwek Ngan Kat Xavier (ML615, Team Vice-Captain, Patrick Nott Pei De (MN616), Goh Qing Yang Esmond (FN605), Bonifacio Dillan Vittorio Gyula (ML512) and Ignatius Liong Yao Koon (LE608, Reserve).
This achievement reflects not only the team's hard work and perseverance, but also the strong spirit of community within the Debate Society. Current and former Josephian debaters and teachers came down to support the team throughout the competition, exemplifying the bonds that continue to unite the Josephian debating family.
