Together with his sailing partner Sean Kum, Nigel made history by securing Singapore’s first-ever Asian Games medal in the Boys’ 29er event. The pair completed the regatta with 35 points over 12 races, finishing second overall and earning a well-deserved place on the podium.
Their achievement was made even more remarkable by the resilience they showed throughout the competition. After ending the first day at the bottom of the six-boat fleet, Nigel and Sean fought their way back strongly, culminating in two second-place and two third-place finishes across the four races on the final day.
Balancing the demands of elite sport with his studies is no small feat, and Nigel’s achievement reflects his determination, discipline and resilience, as well as the support of the people around him.
Nigel also expressed his appreciation for the support he has received from SJI throughout the year, particularly in helping him keep up with his studies alongside his demanding training and competition schedule:
“Throughout this whole year, the school has helped me significantly, especially with keeping track of work. Wouldn’t have done it without the school’s tremendous support.”
The achievement comes during an especially memorable period for Nigel. Just last week, he was conferred the SJIOBA Sportsman of the Year Award for Year 4 — a fitting recognition of his sporting excellence, commitment and perseverance.
From a challenging opening day to standing on the Asian Games podium, Nigel’s journey is a wonderful reminder of what perseverance, composure and determination can achieve.
Nigel, you have done Singapore and SJI proud.
The entire SJI community celebrates this historic achievement with you and looks forward to all that lies ahead.
Congratulations and well done, Nigel!
