13th Singapore Astronomy Olympiad

Of 22 SJI students competing, Lee Jung Han won Silver and five others won Bronze medals, with one Honourable Mention.
The Singapore Astronomy Olympiad (SAO) is Singapore’s premier Astronomy and Astrophysics competition, designed to challenge students in the application of STEM knowledge with a focus on Astronomy and Astrophysics. The Olympiad also serves as a platform to identify and select students who may represent Singapore at the upcoming International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), which will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam later this year.
22 students from SJI participated in the 13th Singapore Astronomy Olympiad,which was hosted at NUS High School of Mathematics and Science on 9 March 2026. Our students performed commendably, with seven students earning awards for their outstanding achievements.
Lee Jung Han (LE606) was awarded the Silver medal, while Esmond Goh (FN605), Wong Yau Hang (FN602), Jonas Aden Ching (LE608), Brianna Kamalakumar (MN618), and Shravy Jindal (ML511) each received Bronze medals. Zachary Goh Shao Ke (MN619) was also recognised with an Honourable Mention.
These accolades reflect the students’ dedication and excellence in this prestigious national competition. The Olympiad consisted of two rounds. The first round featured a two-hour multiple-choice examination covering a wide range of Astronomy and Astrophysics topics. The second round, lasting four hours, comprised three sections: Theoretical, Data Analysis, and Observation. Participants were free to attempt the questions in any order.
The Theoretical section included multiple-choice, short-response, and extended-response questions, with a strong emphasis on computational astronomy and astrophysics. The Data Analysis section required students to engage with authentic astronomy research questions involving graph plotting and basic statistical analysis. The Observation section tested participants’ practical knowledge through the identification of telescope components and the observation of celestial objects and constellations in the night sky.
