Between 1950s and late 1980s, countries such as UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand offered the Colombo Plan scholarships to top Singapore students as a form of aid to ensure a supply of qualified manpower to support Singapore’s economic and social development. By late 1980s, Singapore was considered a developed country and, therefore, stopped receiving Colombo Plan scholarships for its top students in 1988.
