Job Scope for Head of Subject
The Head of Subject (HOS) reports to the Head of Senior School.
Main Working Relationships
The HOS will work closely with the Head of Senior School, Director of IB, teachers in the department and Heads of Department in the secondary school.
Main Responsibilities
- To ensure the quality of the academic education for a particular subject that the SJI Senior School offers.
- To ensure that the values/ethos which underpin the school’s mission are reflected in the department's work.
The HOS will provide the link between the Head of Senior School and the teaching staff.
Specific Tasks
The HOS will perform the following tasks:
- To ensure the quality of the classroom teaching of the subject and be knowledgeable of the performance of the department staff in terms of:
- quality of lessons and lesson preparation;
- quality and frequency of marking;
- quality of reports and assessments;
- meeting of deadlines; and
- relations with students and parents
- To guide department staff to achieve the highest standards of performance in the above areas. In the case where a member of staff is falling below an acceptable standard in one of these areas, the HOS should take an active role in guiding the member of staff to improve his or her performance.
- To play a very active role in facilitating the assimilation of new members of staff into the school and to provide the necessary help and support.
- To regularly review the teaching methods and materials of the department and to ensure that there is a high quality of teaching materials. The HOS should provide an environment where members of staff are motivated to prepare and share quality materials with one another.
- To work with the Head of Senior School in identifying the staffing needs and where possible to actively participate in the recruitment process.
- To implement the SJI’s strategic plan at the department level.
In addition to the above tasks, the HOS will perform the following administrative responsibilities:
- To assist in the scheduling of the department timetable
- To efficiently administer the issuing and return of books and other resources
- To assist departmental staff in cases of student in-discipline, as requested
- To submit an annual budget bid
- To set up and start internal examinations
- To appraise and plan professional development of departmental staff
- To regularly propose resources for the school library to purchase
