Update on SJI IP Stream Proposal

Please see the notice below by the Chairman of the SJI Board of Governors.

30 October 2009

Dear parents, supporters, friends and fellow Josephians

SJI Integrated Programme (IP) Stream Proposal

As you are aware, SJI has submitted an IP stream proposal to MOE in June 2008.  Under the proposal, SJI will offer a 6-year through-train programme for eligible students, in addition to the current O level stream.

In response to queries from many of you in the past few months on the status of the proposal, I would like to inform you that active discussions between MOE and SJI to sort out the details of the proposal are ongoing. This is necessary before the proposal can be approved for implementation by SJI.

In a recent letter to SJI, MOE has noted that SJI is a school with a long tradition and is committed to offering a high quality education to its boys. MOE also said that based on the profile of boys that SJI takes in, our proposed dual-track model, where both GCE ‘O’ levels and IP tracks are offered, is appropriate.  I hope you appreciate that I am not at liberty to disclose anything more at this stage. I am, however, confident that SJI will be able to conclude the discussion with MOE latest by the middle of next year.

Thank you once again for your support for SJI.

Yours sincerely,

NOEL HON
CHAIRMAN
BOARD OF GOVERNORS
ST JOSEPH’S INSTITUTION

SJI garners the coveted SEA award

SJI has been recognized by MOE with a prestigious award this year. The school has been honoured with the School Excellence Award. The School Excellence Award (SEA) is the pinnacle award in the MOE Masterplan of Awards that recognizes the achievement of educational excellence in both academic and non-academic outcomes.

The SEA citation reads as follows: "St. Joseph's Institution (SJI), founded in 1852, was established by the La Salle Brothers. SJI became the only Catholic Independent school in 1988. The school has a tradition , spanning over 155 years, of touching the hearts, engaging the minds and transforming the lives of its boys, giving recognition and affirmation to make them feel special and showing them that they are valued for who they are, not just what they have or can do.  This tradition is manifested in the school values of faith, service and community.  These values act as a compass for all planning and decision making."
