Core Skills Programme

The Core Skills Programme is a 2-year course conducted at Secondary 1 and 2. It is aimed at equipping our boys with the necessary basic skills to be inquirers, thinkers and communicators so that they can use the skills acquired for their academic learning, are able to develop their passion and interest and be prepared for the real world.

Core Skills Areas

This programme prepare our boys to inquire systematically, to think creatively and critically and to communicate their ideas effectively in a succinct manner. The core skils areas covered are common to all subject disciplines and support the learning of specific subjects in the academic curriculum. They include:

Inquiry and research Ability to conduct inquiry and research through planning the study, acquiring of appropriate data, analysing and interpreting the data and evaluating the conclusions.
Creative and critical thinking Ability to think creatively and critically in recognizing and approaching complex problems.
Communication Ability to express ideas, concepts and feelings effectively in a variety of communication modes and to different audiences.
Ability to interpret correctly the ideas, concepts and feelings of others.
Intellectual standards and dispositions Ability to give consideration to his own learning and experience and to assess and understand his strengths and limitations for the purpose of learning and personal development.
Information and communication technology Ability to use a variety of ICT tools to retrieve information from different sources and to share information in different digital formats.
Interpersonal Ability to understand and relate to others and to work effectively as a team member.

Pedagogical Approaches and Assessment

The core skills are acquired through explicit teaching, hand-on activities and an authentic problem-based research project. Where appropriate, the learning of these core skills are also re-inforced through infusion into the specific subjects in the curriculum.

At the end of each term, the boys are given a performance task that will require them to use the core skills learned for the term. At the end of Term 3 of Secondary 1, the boys will begin work on their research project which will lead to a submission of their research proposal at the end of Secondary 1 and the submission of a report on their completed research project and/or product (if any) at the end of Secondary 2.
