ArtScience is based on the idea that integrative learning and thinking can create a conducive environment for the growth and development of innovative ideas. Conceived within the Idea Translation Lab (ITL) at Harvard University, ArtScience melds the thinking and dispositions of the arts and the sciences to facilitate breakthroughs in a multitude of disciplines for the benefit of humanity. A number of non-profit companies and organizations, products, and cultural programmes have been successfully developed since the inception of this programme.
The course at SJI is a unqiue collaboration with Professor David Edwards of Harvard University and his Idea Translation Lab to infuse the nurturing of ArtScience into the school curriculum. In the course at SJI, students participate in a variety of interesting modules in the arts and the Sciences to understand the fundamental processes within these two disciplines, which leads to a final project that addresses a theme for the year (The theme for 2011 is “The Future of Water”).
For further development, students will have opportunities to attend ArtScience workshops at Harvard University in Boston, USA. Top students in the course will be sent to Paris to attend workshops and vie for the prestigious ArtScience Prize Lab in Paris.
In 2012, SJI will launch the Singapore ArtScience Prize, which will feature a series of forums and workshops featuring ArtScience founder Professor David Edwards, and other artists and scientists, and a competition for Singapore students.
