Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs)

In keeping with its Mission, Vision and Values, SJI recognises Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) as an integral part of the school curriculum. The CCA programme complements the academic programme.

CCA plays an important part in the all-round development of each student and enables him to actively participate in the life of the school community. These activities promote service, teamwork, leadership, group and self-discipline, loyalty, healthy living and sportsmanship.

Every Josephian is expected to develop and use his talents for his personal development as well as the service of his school and the wider community. Therefore, the allocation of CCA is based on the following ranked criteria:

  1. student’s talent,
  2. school needs and the availability of places,
  3. student’s interest and
  4. the possibility of the student getting a good CCA grade.

Every Josephian is expected to fulfil a minimum level of participation in the CCA programme of the school as spelt out in the CCA guidelines. Student involvement is monitored and reported as part of the regular and formal reporting to parents on the progress of their son so that a healthy balance between studies and co-curricular activities is established and maintained for all students.

All non-swimmers in Sec 1 and new students in Sec 2 and Sec 3 will go for Swimming Proficiency at the beginning of the year.

CCA Guidelines

Each student is expected to keep to his chosen CCA for his four years of secondary school.

The family and the school must encourage each student to commit himself to his chosen CCA and balance this with his studies. Not every boy can achieve a Distinction ‘A’ grade in CCA but all are expected to give of their best in whatever CCA they pursue.

The revised CCA Grading Scheme, introduced by MOE in January 2003, known as LEAPS, takes into account the diverse CCA programmes offered by the school as well as the nature and level of students’ participation.

This revised scheme will award students CCA points in five categories:

Leadership: Position of responsibility held in a Core CCA and in any other activity (maximum two activities). Prior permission is necessary for a second CCA.

Enrichment: This will take into account the Student Development Programme, comprising: RME, PSE, Outdoors Education and Aesthetics.

Achievement: This will comprise the following three categories:
• Representation (representing the school at inter-school competitions and SYF Central Judging as well as representing an external organisation in inter-school, regional or international competitions).
• Attainment (attaining awards of a non-competitive nature, e.g. NYAA)
• Accomplishment (winning awards at intra-school, national, regional or international competitions).

Participation: This reflects the minimum of 75% attendance each year of his membership in his Core CCA and his participation in at least two intra-school activities, school performances, SYF Opening Ceremony and/or National Day Parade.

Service: In keeping with the Lasallian ethos of the school which encourages each student to be ‘a man for others’ and the national policy of greater community involvement, each student should aim to perform a minimum of 25 hours a year. The maximum five points is awarded for 100 hours of service over  four years. The school will try to cover 60 to 80 hours and it will be helpful if the family can arrange to cover the other 20 to 40 hours.

Core CCA
Students are encouraged to specialise in one area of involvement. This will be their Core CCA. The Core CCA must be selected from the table shown below only and from the following categories: Sports & Games, Uniformed Groups, and Performing Arts.

Catholic boys are strongly encouraged to make one of the  Lasallian Catholic Youth societies their second CCA. All Catholic students in Sec 1 are required to enrol in the Legion of Mary, the St Vincent de Paul Society or the Young Christian Students and attend all meetings during their first year in SJI. They may opt to continue or discontinue their membership after this period.

Intra-School Activities (Inter-House & Inter-Class)
Intra-school activities are an important part of our CCA programme and are vital in the development of school spirit amongst all the students.

1. Every student is expected to participate in at least 2 of the following intra-school sporting activities:

  • Cross Country
  • Dragon Boat
  • Founder’s Day Relays
  • Soccer
  • Swimming
  • Touch Rugby
  • Track & Field

2. Students may compete in more than two intra-school activities

3. Intra-School Sports Champion Class Shields. There are 4 Shields, one for each Year Level and one overall Champion House Shield which will be awarded to the classes and House that achieve the highest tally of points in one year. The points will be accumulated thus:

  • Intra-School Sports Results
  • Physical Fitness Tests
