Admission To Secondary 1 (2018)

DIRECT SCHOOL ADMISSION EXERCISE FOR ADMISSION TO SECONDARY 1 IN 2018

1. The SJI Direct School Admission (DSA) to Secondary 1 in 2018 is open to applicants (boys only) interested in gaining admission to SJI. Interested applicants should be taking the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) in 2017.

2. Applicants who are not studying in a MOE school and/or are international students studying in Singapore are to approach the Ministry of Education, Singapore for advice. Please refer below for more information.

3. SJI offers the four-year O-level programme (OP) that leads to the GCE O-level Examination Certificate and the six-year Integrated Programme (IP) that leads to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.

4. The school is located at 38, Malcolm Road, Singapore 308274.

5. The DSA exercise invites applicants for the GCE O-levels and the Integrated Programme (IP) in the following domains:

O-level Programme

6. Due to changes in policies, applications for admission to the SJI Integrated Programme must be via talents in a specific domain. Applicants may choose to be assessed for their talent in multiple domains, with the exception of Sports, Art and Music. Amongst Sports, Art and Music, only one domain can be selected.

7. Parents and students are encouraged to choose schools wisely based on the student’s aptitudes and strengths, bearing in mind the school’s academic and non-academic requirements and the programmes available to develop the area of talent.

- Have sat for the General Ability Test (GAT).

Commitment to the Art Programme from Secondary 1 to Secondary 4.

Lessons are conducted in the afternoon after curriculum hours.

No-transfer to another school upon admission via DSA.

Integrated Programme Music Music

- Prior music training – minimum Grade 4 certification in Practical and Theory, or equivalent.

AND

- Consistently strong academic results in Primary 4, 5 and 6 examinations with a disposition towards IB learning.

- Have sat for the General Ability Test (GAT).

Commitment to a Performing Art CCA from Secondary 1 to Secondary 4.

The performing art CCAs in SJI are (choose one):
- Band
- Vocal Ensemble
- Guitar Ensemble

Private lessons, not funded by the school, on chosen instrument from Secondary 1 to Secondary 4.

Lessons in school are conducted in the afternoon after curriculum hours.

Integrated Programme Leadership Leadership

- Documented evidence on leadership responsibilities within the school and/or outside of school.

- Examples include, school prefectorial board, CCA leadership, leadership positions in community projects or welfare organisations.

AND

- Consistently strong academic results in Primary 4, 5 and 6 examinations with a disposition towards IB learning.

- Have sat for the General Ability Test (GAT).

Commitment to the programme from Secondary 1 to JC 2.

No-transfer to another school upon admission via DSA.

Integrated Programme Innovation Innovation

- Documented evidence on innovative practices within the school and/or outside of school.

- Examples include photos and write-ups of works of innovation produced by the applicant or certificate of achievement in competitions with an emphasis on innovation.

AND

- Consistently strong academic results in Primary 4, 5 and 6 examinations with a disposition towards IB.

- Have sat for the General Ability Test (GAT).

Commitment to the programme from Secondary 1 to JC 2.

Application Process

9. Applications for the SJI DSA are to be made online at www.sji.edu.sg/dsasec1.

10. Upon completion of the online application form:

a. Click ‘Submit’
b. Note that the system will issue an ‘Application Number’.
c. Print a hardcopy of the completed form for submission to SJI.

Do note that the Application Number is required for future correspondences, hence please keep a copy of the Application Number for future reference.


Hardcopy Submission

11. The hardcopy submission is to include the following:

a) A print-out of the completed application form duly signed.
b) A set of school results from Primary 4 to Primary 6. Certified true copies are NOT necessary.
c) A portfolio or documents supporting the application.

12. Hardcopy submission can be made either by hand or by post to:

Submission by Hand

13. Applicants who submit the application by hand will receive an acknowledgement slip from the school.

Submission by Postal Mail

14. Applicants who submit the application by postal mail WILL NOT receive an acknowledgement slip from the school.

15. We are UNABLE to check if the application is received via postal mail.

Deadline for Submission

16. The deadline for the submission of the hardcopy application with the supporting documents is Monday, 3 July 2017, 4.00pm.

17. Please be advised that your application is only considered complete when all the following are fulfilled:

a) The online application has been made and an application number has been issued by the system;

b) A hardcopy of the completed application form with the documents have been submitted to SJI; AND

c) Applicants for the IP have registered and sat for the GAT.

Incomplete applications will not be processed.

Registration for GAT

18. Applicants for the IP, including students who are in MOE’s Gifted Education Programme are to concurrently register for the General Ability Test (GAT) at http://www.gat.sg

19. Please note that this is the last year that GAT will be used. After this year’s exercise, the selection processes will be adjusted.

20. A registration fee of $60 (excluding GST) is payable to the Principal Academy Inc. Applicants who are recipients of the Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) will have their fees waived upon producing the necessary documentation to the Principal Academy Inc.

21. IP applicants are advised to log on to the GAT website and register for the test prior to logging on to the SJI website. This is to help applicants complete the online application as one of the fields in the SJI Online Application Form requires the test date for GAT.

23. Please note that applicants for the O-level – Sport is NOT required to sit for the GAT.

Applicants Not Studying in a MOE-school

24. Applicants who are currently NOT studying in a MOE school are required to approach the MOE Customer Service Centre at 1 North Vista Drive, Singapore 138675 for advice. These include Singaporeans studying overseas, home-schooled students, international students studying in international schools in Singapore.

Payment

25. IP applicants will make a payment of $60 (excluding GST) to Principal Academy Inc for the General Ability Test (GAT).

26. For O-level (Sports) applicant, a $50 (inclusive of GST) administrative fee is payable. Payment made at the school should be in cash (exact amount) or cheque crossed in favour of ‘St Joseph’s Institution’. Application sent via postal mail should include a cheque made in favour of ‘St Joseph’s Institution’. Applicants who are recipients of the Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) will have their fees waived upon producing the necessary document.

27. Please note that fees paid are non-refundable regardless whether the applicant is shortlisted for trials or interviews.


Trials/Audition/Presentation/Interview

28. Only shortlisted applicants will be informed to attend the interview/selection tests. Applicants who do not hear from the school by 4 August 2017 can assume that the application is unsuccessful.

Communication with Applicants

30. All communication will be made via email to the email addresses that are indicated in the application form. Hence, please ensure that the email addresses provided in the application form remains valid during this period. It is strongly advised that at least two email addresses be provided so that the correspondences can get through at least one email account.

SJI reserves the rights not to release the results and reasons for non-selection.

Fees paid and documents submitted in connection with the application are non-returnable regardless of whether the applicant is shortlisted.
